Residents of Onsu-dong were shocked when they spotted the colourful bird in the area on Sunday. Peacocks are not native to South Korea, are rare as pets and there is no nearby zoo.

In videos provided to Reuters by Seoul Guro Fire Station, people are heard cheering as the peacock, with its proud plumage, is caught in a net by firemen.

The fire brigade said the bird's owner had contacted them and taken their pet back on Monday. Keeping peacocks as pets is legal in South Korea.
